William Morris ‘Strawberry Thief’ Armchair

William Morris ‘Strawberry Thief’ Armchair

A unique opportunity to acquire an heirloom chair. Founder of the English Arts and Crafts Movement in the latter half of the 19th century, was a pivotal figure whose legacy we enjoy to this day. It was Morris who said “have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.” He was also a man who demanded the very highest standards both of himself and from the craftsmen who executed his furniture designs and printed his textiles. In this same spirit Scotts of Stow have commissioned a limited edition of this exquisite English armchair. No expense has been spared, no corners cut. It is our aim to create a piece of furniture of heirloom quality, to be used and enjoyed today, then to be passed down to future generations.Craftsmanship of which Morris would have been proud. The elegant simplicity of this armchair’s design is pure Arts and Crafts and so, we believe, is the level of craftsmanship that built it. It is made exclusively for us by artisan furniture makers in a Norfolk workshop. The sturdy frame is solid beech, traditionally hand crafted throughout. The front legs are turned wood, with authentic solid brass castors the rear legs are gracefully flared. The seat features luxurious individual pocket springing for lasting comfort – and the quality of the upholstery is supreme, designed to match anything on the market today with beautifully piped scrolled arm rests and immaculate hand finishing.Classic William Morris design. The fabric we chose for this important chair is Strawberry Thief, one of William Morris's most popular repeating designs for textiles. It takes as its subject the thrushes that Morris found stealing fruit in the kitchen garden of his country home, Kelmscott Manor in Oxfordshire. Due to the complexity of the original printing process, this was one of Morris Co.'s most expensive cottons. His 19th century customers were not put off by the high price, however, and Strawberry Thief proved to be one of Morris's most commercially successful patterns. Indeed it is still enormously popular to this day, which is why we specified it in our commission. Also included is a matching 18” cushion, piped and zippered, with a sumptuous feather pad.A lasting investment in sheer quality. This chair is not cheap however, it is excellent value. Furniture of this quality cannot be mass produced in a factory, it requires the hand of the most skilled craftsmen. Those discerning enough to appreciate this fact will not be disappointed, we promise you.
